Change in Karate: Good, Bad and Ugly

By Practical Kata Bunkai on

https://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/ In this video I discuss the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to change, evolution and innovation in karate. I first chat about the tradition of change before moving onto discuss what would make such changes good or bad. I then discuss some of the more common oppositions to change and explain why they are both invalid and harmful to karate’s future. These include: A false understanding of karate’s history and traditions. The false notion of “style preservation”. The inappropriate (and sometimes downright ugly) assertions of who is “allowed” to make changes. Agree or disagree, I hope you find the video interesting and thought-provoking.
