Karate: What Kime is REALLY for?

By Practical Kata Bunkai on

https://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/ In this video we look at why we briefly tense the muscles at the end of many techniques (kime). The term “Kime” (決め) means something like “decide” or “set in place”. Many karateka also colloquially use the term to refer to the power, focus or decisiveness of a technique. There is even an old two-person self-defence-based kata in Judo called “Kime-no-Kata” (the kata of decisiveness). However, in karate circles, the term is most commonly (and accurately) used to refence the momentary locking of the muscles at the end of a technique. In this video we look at why we do that, as well as debunking a couple of the most common misunderstandings around it.
